Spring cleaning time

Cleaning time!
As I have mentioned before, I am not really a cleanliness freak & dread thorough house cleaning. It was something that had to be done (at home) and I kept putting it off daily, making stupid, silly excuses. I kept postponing the inevitable (that's one my my bad habits that I should work at ridding myself from!) Anyway, today it could not be postponed any longer so we got to it. Mom did most of it, & I helped a little bit with the windows. But the thing is, I wonder why I dread it so much? It can be very therapeutic, & the feeling after it's all done is wonderful!
And you guys must have obviously noticed the new template. I liked the old one, but it was kinda bugging me in some little ways. Everything about this one's perfect! I can't stick to one template for too long, I start to feel... redundant. But I feel lovely now! :)
Ah, I'm happy!

Happy Birthday Lucy Lawless!

Growing up, Lucy Lawless always was my favorite actress.
Lucy as Xena.
I remember thinking that she was the best actress in the world, she was so good at fighting & martial arts (I didn't know about stunt doubles or Zoe Bell at the time) & wanting to be like her (This is when I was six or seven). She was my absolute hero
During her celebrity duet days.
Watching Xena, I knew that a girl could do anything she wanted. That girls could not only be equal to, but better than men. Growing up in a place like India with all the soap operas (both Indian & international Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhu Bahu Thi & The Bold & The Beautiful were my mom's favorites & I was subjected to them daily) where women's major tv rolls were as scheming daughters-in-law plotting revenge on their evil mothers-in-law or repeatedly having affairs & jumping into bed with one man, then later his father, then his brother, Xena obviously meant a lot to me & influenced me in many ways (more than I can put into words).
Lucy as Lucretia in Spartacus.
Then I grew up.
Just because I didn't want to be an actress any more doesn't mean I respected or admired her any less. She was still my hero.
I remember cheering her on when she took part in Celebrity Duets... coming second was pretty damn good!
Over the years I've watched a few films over & over, just because she has a bit part it them! I do that the same for tv show episodes she guest stars in. (I thought Lucy's role in Bedtimes Stories was stupid. But her role in Euro Trip rocked!)
And now we can all watch her in Spartacus, & I'm happy again!
Happy Birthday Lucy! I hope to see you some day! :)

Bittersweet morning

This morning was like any other morning at first. I was sleeping in late. (Something very special happened to mom though she'll blog about it soon.)
Soon later, I got some sad news, Dad is gonna be further delayed on the ship. That's sad for oh so many reasons... I'll have to wait longer for my MBP, our holiday plans for Goa will go haywire, & Dad really misses home! But such is life, & there really isn't anything we can do about it.
So I was idly browsing some blog I read, when I reached Deepaz World of Artz. Let me tell you a little about her- I don't know her that well, & have just started reading her blog recently, but I can tell you one thing, she is a very talented artist. I consider myself an artist too, but people like her give me low self esteem! I can only sketch half decently, but Deepa is brilliant & versatile- she draws & paints in many different styles & even practices Digital art. So anyway, she had a giveaway a week or so ago, & I really liked one of the prints she was giving away, so I commented.
Naadanpennu
This morning I saw that she had announced the winners- And I was one of them! I had won the very print I admired-  Naadanpennu!
Here's what she says about it-
A traditional Kerala girl attired in kasavu mundu veshti (the dress traditionally called so is handwoven in offwhite with golden thread at the border) with palakkamala (the necklace) and jhimki (eardrops). The cream line on top of the bindi (red dot on the forehead) is made of sandalwood paste and is a sign of auspicion. It is also said to cool one's brain...
What makes me even more excited is that I'll be going to Kerala (Kovalam Beach) for a holiday very soon. I've been to Cochin a couple of times before, from the ship, but this will be my first holiday to Kerala. Yay!

So this morning I had both sad & happy news. What about you? How was your morning?

Love,

Let's all welcome her...

I was in a fix about what to title this post. I wanted it to be descriptive, without giving away too much.
Anyway, you all know about that little 20 before 20 list I have (scroll down to the bottom of the blog to see it).
I have officially achieved my 2nd goal from it-

14. Get Mom (and/or) Dad to blog.

Yes, you read right. My Mom is now a blogger!
Let me tell you a little about it first...
You guys know I had been pestering her since long, as I always maintained, she's smart, but maybe a little rusty.
So I hooked her up with a new blog & a template she liked, gave her a few guidelines, & left her at the post editor- pure magic! I didn't expect her to pour her heart out, but she did! And I must say, even from an objective viewpoint, that it is a lovely first post. Expect more to come!
I wish her all the very best.
Her Blog: My Ramblings...
Do check it out!
Boy is Dad gonna be surprised when he gets back & sees that I'm not the only one blogging in the house!

Love,

Random Snapshots from Today...

Are you wondering what I've been up to these past few days? Err... Maybe not!
I'll tell you anyway... with pictures!
I got a pedicure yesterday. It felt super nice & now I'm in love with my feet all over again! Here's a picture:
Mommy dearest's reaction on originally seeing the picture: "Your toes look loooonnnng. Really looooonnnnggg."
Her reaction on seeing the picture after I added the text (my feet & copyright): *dry, sarcastic tone* "Yeah. In case people think they're your hands."

I received a package in the mail earlier today... it was a dog-tag I ordered earlier this month featuring none other than Jim Morrison (I designed it)
Mr Mojo Rising sayeth...
On one side it has a picture of Jim Morrison while on the other it has one of his quotes (he said a lot of brilliant things so I had a lot of trouble choosing). But I finally settled on one of my favorites:
I believe in a long, prolonged, derangement of the senses in order to obtain the unknown.
-Jim Morrison
And here's a picture of my three lovely dog-tags nestled together in a tin. Read about the other two here.
My dog-tags all together!

Book Cataloging Websites: goodreads, shelfari & LibraryThing compared

So many choices!
This posts attempts to briefly chronicle my experiences with various book cataloging websites.
I have always loved reading. And I have always love the internet & Social Media. Now what if you could combine reading & social networking together? Well, you can! With book cataloging websites. Don't know what they are? Let me give you a simple explanation.
The basic purpose of these websites is to give you a place to catalog all the books you own/you've read. You can organize them in different ways (collections, tags on some websites; shelves on others)
They also have other features such as adding friends, finding people with libraries similar to your, widgets to show off on your blog, book recommendations, etc.
Now obviously, there are a ton of such websites out there, but I will only consider the three most common ones & then tell you which one I picked & why.

1. goodreads
What can I say about them? They have a Book Compatibility Test similar to Flixter's MCT (Movie Compatibility test) That was where I noticed the first flaw- there is an option to give the book a particular star rating, & there's an option to say 'I want to read it' but there's no option to say 'Not Interested' (Flixter's MCT has an option). It is wrong for goodreads to assume we've either read the book or want to read it. What about if we are not interested at all? Then are we supposed to give it a lot rating? It wouldn't be fair to give the book a low rating if we haven't read it. The after I skipped this badly made test, I was shown all sorts of books in regional Indian language (guessing the sites crawls your location & then recommends books). That was the last straw for me. Bye bye goodreads

An example of shelfari's shelf widget.

2. shelfari
A lot of you must have seen the shelfari widget on people's blogs. It's this thing that simulates a wooden bookcase with the books on shelves. I find the wood look extremely gaudy (that's just my opinion). A lot of shelfari fans claim to dislike other book cataloging websites because they don't have shelves to organize their books. But shelfari has one pretty big downside: spam. Shelfari is notorious for constantly spamming their users (don't believe me? Just google 'shelfari spam' or read this. After I read all that stuff, I was thanking
my stars I didn't register there myself.

3. LibraryThing
At first I didn't like this websites because it was so understated. I don't like gaudy but I don't like websites that look like they have absolute no CSS (styling). Slowly, I started to appreciate the site more. It has the largest user community because it was the first in this game, all others are just 'me too' websites. There is a catch: you can only add 200 books with a free account, after which you have to upgrade to a paid account. Paid membership costs $10 yearly or $25 for a lifetime. That too put me off at first but then I did a little research & understood the value of that money- LibraryThing is massive, yet has basically no advertising on it's website. So they need something to offset the running costs, if not make a profit. And a lot of people say that $25 isn't much when you're supporting such a good site. I too am completely willing to pay that money but have decided that I will do it when I actually do reach the point where I've 200 books- It will be a wonderful personal milestone. LibraryThing lets you organize your books according to collections (such as my library, currently reading, wishlist) & also allows to add tags to your books (I tag according to genres).

You can also give books star ratings & write reviews.
You can also add widgets to your blog, which are highly customizable. You can choose the number of books to display, whether to animate or not, whether to show reviews or only covers, which collections and/or tags to display books from. I have chosen to display a 'currently reading' widget. (Check my right sidebar) I chose one book, cover only, no styling, display from 'currently reading' & animate after 20 seconds. (I chose the animate option because I'm always reading more than one book at a time. If you read only one book at a time, choose 'don't animate') You put up the code once & you don't have to bother to change the code every time you're reading a new one, jut edit the relevant collection on LibraryThing. I know this widget will be really useful for blogger who love putting up a picture of the book they're currently reading on their blog sidebar.
You are also able to see people who have a similar library to you. You can also add friends & leave comments on eachother's profiles. You can even add pictures. Then there's author cloud. After you've added some books, you can go & see which authors are most common in your library. You can add 'favorite authors' so everybody can know who you like reading. Needless to say, I'm hooked! I've added more than half of my book personal collection & am contemplating whether to add dad's books (he's got a lot more than me!) And there was another little surprise: I found that I had created an account for myself way back in August 2007 (I'm not using that account now.)
Here's you can see my LibraryThing Library.
If you are already on LibraryThing, or chose to join it now, feel free to add me: My LibraryThing profile. I'd love to see what you'r reading!

Cheers,

What's been up...

So, I s'pose you're wondering where I've bin all these days.
Well I'll tell ya mahself.

I've voluntarily had completely erratic sleep patterns these days, I'm just so happy with all the freedom. I feel like Atlas, relieved of his burden. My last exam was on the fifteenth. After the exam I (briefly) went shopping with my two best pals, & then got home, after which I sat almost continuously at my computer till past 2 AM. Then I went to sleep, & got up at 2 PM the next day... The other two days have been spent similarly, either playing AOE II, watching old episode of Hercules & Xena & moping around abut how sad I am that Xena is over (My heart really feels broken!) & reading, viciously. I've completed one of those lovely 'Alfred Hitchcock presents' anthologies- No. 26, Shrouds & Pockets, & started on another one from the same series. And the one story I read yesterday had a lot of Pirate Lingo, which should explain the first two lines of this post! I feel blissful. Oh & I also feel like a lazy bum. So I've decided I need to get out of this lazy cycle.
I'm going to do something constructive & catalog all my books.
One of the things mentioned on the list is that I want to catalog all my books, I also plan to post reviews on all the books I read, you have been forewarned! Oh & more on the book cataloging coming tomorrow...

Love,

Totally awesome news!

Hiya friends!
First off, I want to say that I'm really sorry for not replying to all your earlier comments. I'm still a little lazy/tired I guess. But I did try to read & comment on your posts when I could, & I promise to do it with vengeance after the 15th!
Anyway, I have totally awesome news to share. Dad's bought me a gift! Something I've really wanted. I've even blogged about it, multiple times. Can you guess what it is?
Let me give you a little hint...

Soon it's gonna be mine!
Yes, my dad bought me a 13" MacBook Pro! Thanks Dad!!!
Anyway, the slightly sad news is that the earliest I'll get to lay my hands on this baby is by the end of this month... That's not long away now, is it?
Not that I'm complaining!

I'm going write a thank you email to my dad. I'm completely ecstatic.
Life was already good, but it just seems to have got a lot better!

Cheers,

PS- If any of you guys out there are using Macs yourself, can you maybe suggest some Apps that may be useful to me or ones that you think I might like? Thanks in advance.

Exam Malpractices in Rizvi College of Arts, Science & Commerce in Mumbai during HSC board exams

When I found out my HSC exam center was in Rizvi College, I was terribly dismayed. I had heard legendary stories about how bad that college was (here I mean both student & faculty).
Anyway, I decided I had to make the most of it, & that I would only be there 6 days.
Talk about irony
On the day of the first exam, the invigilator who entered looked strict. I was happy. See there's something you need to know about me. I'm not perfect, but I don't believe in copying in exams, be it from a piece of paper or by asking a friend, even if I feel I'm gonna fail in the subject.
I think I first encountered this particular boy on the day of my third exam. They are a gang of 3 or 4 (or maybe 5!) who all carry a lot of chits with them, & constantly try to peep into other people's papers too. I was utterly disgusted to find that they had not one but many chits & were literally writing the whole paper from those chits. My blood boiled, but I ignored it. Besides almost all the invigilators there are either blind, completely apathetic, or both.
Today I was terribly disgusted to see that I would be sitting right besides one of these guys, but then I decided that I had to concentrate on my own paper. Then the invigilator walked it. And the repulsive guy to my right said 'Oh Fuck!' after which he gave a slight pause & repeated the same two words again. That was when I knew that he probably had some sort of information that today's invigilator was genuinely strict. And I was absolutely happy when one guys got from the said group, sitting two benches away from my 'partner' actually got caught (approximately 20 minuted into the exam). The guys started to get a whiny voice like he was crying & begged for mercy. the invigilator agreed, as long as he turned in all the chits he was carrying. He turned in 4 or 5. Few minutes later the invigilator returned to see that there were three more lying on the ground. Shheesssh!! Then the invigilator went on giving the people a supposed 'last warning' telling them that they could safely hand over chits now, but if they were caught later, they would be in big trouble (he threatened to file a police complaint!) The moment the invigilator left the room, my partner started knocking on the desk asking me for an answer (I didn't hear which answer he asked me for, there was no way I was going to tell him).
When I told him I didn't know it, he actually had the audacity to tell me to ask my friend, he knew we were friends as he had seen us together before the commencement of the exam. I ignored him & continued writing. Soon he was done with the objectives after copying them all. Then he went to the subjective questions (If you're thinking the copying stopped there, it definitely didn't! It just got much worse...)
Now for each & every question, he was removing a different chit from his sock, writing the answer, putting the chit back in his sock & removing another one. It was funny, knowing that the invigilator was 'on the prowl' yet he couldn't see this guy copying. It was also very disturbing, as I could see this all going on from the corner of my eye. I mean, it's not fair. Not fair to those who actually work for their marks, when people score distinction & higher in this way.
Finally, after 2 1/2 hours (it was a 3 hour paper), I had enough. I had given him enough warning, giving him angry looks every time he took out a chit. So I reported him. He acted totally innocent, & gave up one chit, then (keeping up with the innocent act) he emptied his jeans pockets to show he had no more chits. So I actually had to tell the invigilator that they were in his socks. And that's when the enraging part happened. All the invigilator did was take his chits & throw them out & let him continue writing as if nothing happened (whatever happened to the threats about police complaints?) The boy had copied over 3/4th of the paper now, & got most of his marks. Yet he was not punished at all! And here comes the funny part: In the last half an hour, he sat there & didn't write more than 4 lines! All the time was spent looking around & glaring angrily at me.
Well, honestly, I didn't give a damn about his anger. But I was terribly angry on all the invigilators & their turning a blind eye to all the copying going on. Were they being bribed? It sure looks like it. I feel so helpless right now, but I'm glad I didn't keep quiet.
I personally don't blame the kids itself, not that I'm saying that they didn't know what they were doing, but the invigilators should be strict, it's a boards exam, dammit! I have no idea whom to go to, whom to complaint to, because if I did I would go do it, without a second thought. But I feel good sharing it here, at least others in the blogosphere can know what type of a college it is, other than the humbug they write on their website.
I'm completely outraged.

The Screwdriver effect

Screwdrivers can make you tipsy!
I always love to record 'firsts' on my blog, be it my first post, first photo with my dSLR or first try at light photography.
And today I am proud to record another first! My first screwdriver!
Now before you get any ideas let me tell you that I am definitely not a spoiled teen.
My first drink was a Bacardi Breezer when I was 11. Mommy dearest always believed in letting me try whatever I want at home first so that I am not tempted to try it in dark, shady bars with my friends (for the record, I haven't been in a pub/disco till date!) Back in those days there were just 3 flavors- Lemon, Orange & Cranberry.
The three original flavors! Still my favorite drink.
I cannot stand the taste of beer somehow, I find it yuck. The only time I can stand it is when it's shandy, which consists of half beer & lemon fizzy drink (such as Limca, but 7 Up would do too).
Sometimes I do have a glass of port wine.
Actually for me to like any alcoholic drink, it has to be sweet! That's why Breezers have still remained my favorite.

Anyway, back to the whole Screwdriver thingy.
The recipe for a screwdriver is incredibly simple-

  • 1 part Vodka
  • 2 parts Orange Juice

Mix it all up serve on the rocks in a highball glass.
Mom & me were at a very formal do. We've been to those things before, but usually only have juices. But this time I told mom that we should try something alcoholic. So we went over to the bar & asked for screwdrivers. But mom fretted a little when he was pouring the vodka so it ended up approximately 1 part vodka & 5 or 6 parts Orange Juice. But I was thankful for those proportions later because when I drank it, my head started spinning just a little. But once I had dinner, the spinning stopped & I was completely fine! I'm glad I tried it...

Cheers, (literally!)
