There is a difference between Blogging & Plagiarizing!

I have a lot of friends on twitter. I haven't met most of them in real life, but I chat with them quite often. One such 'friend' was @AnkitBathija. I did consider him a friend.
He describes himself as a 'Interactive Marketing Practitioner, digital media whatever' among other things. Recently he tweeted a link to one of his blog posts on his 'social media blog' so I went to check it out & comment because, hey! I'm a blogger & I like commenting on fellow blogger's posts.
The post in question was named 'WHY TWITTER IS LIKE A ONE NIGHT STAND'.
(Here is a screenshot of the post, in case the blogger decides to take it down after he reads this:
I liked the posts. It was incredibly well written. I have conversed with the said blogger, so I knew this was too well written to have been written by him. So I copied a few lines from the post (as-is) & googled. And I came across the original article. Why Twitter is like a one night stand by Andrew Hunt.
The article is plagiarized almost word for word. It annoyed me, so I asked Ankit Bathija whether he wrote the post himself. He said Yes, taking the credit for the well written post. I told him I know the origin of the post. He quickly deleted the comments. This was a couple of days ago. Today I woke to find some mean comments on my previous blog post. In that comment, a commenter called 'anatha' with only an email id & no blog has accused me of plagiarizing posts. Not only that, he claims I have plagiarized more than 30 posts. Now that's a laugh. Anyway, in over 2 years of blogging, I got my first ever flaming comment. Is it a co-incidence that I get a comment falsely accusing me of being a plagiarizer after I caught a real one?
That's not all, actually. I looked around a little more on Ankit's blog. Check out the screenshot below.

The bottom right of this picture above has him claiming that he has 1300+ feed subscribers.  I got suspicious for two reasons.
a)He does not use a feedburner chicklet that I have in my sidebar. You can't fake a chicklet. I have 276 feed subscribers as of now. 276 real subscribers (thank you readers!). On the other hand, it's super easy to just fake a number.
b) A pathetic blog that plagiarizes whole articles & doesn't have a single comment on most posts has 1300 subscribers? That's a joke.
So I did a little tech detective work. The link to his feed is here. I googled & found a legit way to find someone's real feed subscribers when they aren't showing it. Legit, non hacking. Just key in a url. Using that method, I found his true feed subscribers- See for yourself.

He has 32 subscribers. And he claims that he has 1300. Here's the link to see it for yourself.
Usually I would ignore such misguided humans. But I felt this needed to be told.
I don't know why such pathetic creatures even call themselves bloggers. They should call themselves 'copy-pasters' or just plagiarizers. I haven't bothered to check the other posts on his blog but I'm pretty certain they are obtained the same way.
These people give real bloggers a bad name! *sigh*
Let me know what you think? Have you ever come across plagiarizing bloggers? Or got nasty comments from anonymous cowards? Let me know!

UPDATE: The said 'blogger' has put up a post on his blog defending himself.
He has cooly edited the post now citing Andrew as the author & claims that he had Andrew Hunt credited in the author box all along. Does he think I'm stupid? Copying from other blogs is unethical but I wouldn't have said a thing if he had credited the right author. But he didn't. He cited himself as the author & when I asked him whether he wrote it he said yes. He obviously deleted those comments so I don't have any proof. But I was smart enough to take lots of screenshots before writing this post. So check this screenshot:

Go ahead, magnify the screenshot. It is the same article I have talked about & it clearly shows that he cited himself as the author. Don't believe me? Go checkout this cached screenshot from google of the said post on 19th April. Again, you can see for yourself that he cited himself as the author. How pathetic.

Waiting to see how many more lies he tells to try & cover his tracks. Sorry Ankit, your lies aren't going to fool me!

  1. Way to go Magali. I really do not like to fight but you have to fight back when you are right. I know you are doing the right thing and I am really proud of you.

  2. Thanks Mom! :)
I too was going to let it go at first but then decided that people need to know about creeps like this who call themselves bloggers.

  3. Something should be done about this. Did you inform the actual author about it? Way to go! :D

  4. I have! I think he's used to people plagiarizing his articles. And thanks. :)

  5. Great work for standing up to plagiarism! I had blogged last year about someone copying one of my posts and doing so in very bad English. And recently I noticed someone else say their post was copied. Such people out there give passionate bloggers a bad name...

  6. Well Done Magali !! And I like the way u explained it... We need to expose such 'bloggers' out in the open..

  8. oops :) well done .. Ms. bond on the movee :) I better not be on ur wrong side ever ..

On serious note I dont mind people using others work provided they dont claim it to be there's , That is bad putting someone else work is not wrong ..

But its good you brought it out, dont know why they would do that, or have a blog and not write anything of there own..

Why he wrote a nasty comment on your blog i dont understand that, Now that was so BAD and that i do mind that.
He is obviously wanting people to visit his blog hence the cheating in the numbers too.

  9. I guess this post got him a lot of traffic on his site!

His next post should be 'Thank you Magali'
    =P

  10. I know one such blogger too. You want his blog's link and the blog from where he has copied the article? And we has even won big prize money from Indiblogger.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Thank You! :) I remember the post on your blog about someone plagiarizing your whole posts for Adsense money.
I know. I don't know why such 'anti-social elements' exist in society. But it's part of life I guess!

  12. Yes, Nethra. I would love to know, so please share the links. Does indiblogger know about the plagiarism? It's not fair at all.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I don't know whether the indiblogger knows or not. Might be the post that won the prize wasn't copied from anywhere.

I'm not in talking terms with that blogger anymore due to some other issues and I'm not even the one who found out that it was copied from elsewhere; you see, i don't even open his blog.

Can I send you the links on FB instead of here? I don't want to get involved in this matter; not that I am scared but I loathe that person very much. Hope you understand!

  14. Boy! you really did some great detective work..way to go and good to see that you took a stand for more often than not we say 'Chalta hai' and do nothin

  15. Dear Magali,
it is sad, but true. Some unethical persons masquerading as bloggers do indulge in plagiarism and all of us have suffered it too. I just don't understand why they do it.
By the way, most of these plagiarisers are anonymous bloggers or they blog under a pseudonym.
I wonder what we can do about this!
    A very thought provoking post.

  16. I understand.
Let me know via fb okay? :)

  17. Lol yeah I can be dangerous like that!
Exactly my point. It wouldn't have been wrong if he copied the word but gave credit to the actual author. He didn't do that. He passed it off as his own. He lied about it. That's just not right.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I know! That was a 'side effect' of this post. Sure his blog got the most traffic ever all thanks to me. Sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm taking that as a compliment so thanks! I too was going to let it pass but after discussing with my mom I thought it would be better to post it & expose such people!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Thanks for your comment Vikram. I too wonder why they indulge in such unethical practices.

  21. Oh my! Shame on such people! What a post..good job..I hope that guy learns something.

  22. Strange what people can do to gain traffic...

  23. That's a great job magali !! I really appreciate! You came forward to tell about a -plagiarizer- .. Hope the real author knows about this thing! :)

Well written. You are too intelligent in taking screen shots! :) *Witty* ;)
    Go on..!!

And ya.. I never came across such copy pasters till now.. But, I see .. few ppl like you updates their blogs with such news.. This is the 3rd time am hearing abt a copy paster..

  24. Hey, Hi

Well this is like...wow!! thinking if am crazy?? hehehe...yeah kinda...the thing is, since i reported a case of plagiarism a couple of weeks back, this happens to be the fourth similar incident!!!
hmm, truly said, it is indeed a sad thing...nice work...

  25. Very well said! These things remain unnoticed because they disappear in the Storm, but Imagine if it had happened in a Large scale, literally it would be like the movie "The Social Network"!

  26. Kudos Magali! I have come across many so-called 'bloggers' and mostly they will call themselves Internet Marketing Gurus or something.

Forget about they knowing anything about what real Internet Marketing is, they do not even know how basic things such as RSS Chicklets, RSS Reader counter, etc. work. They just read some pathetic guides on the internet and get into such acts.

But story does not end here. Why I am saying is because of this - Do you know that there are some professional bloggers (Now I do not know whether I should be calling them 'Professional Bloggers') who some real cool (read: pathetic) posts on how to ... fake RSS reader numbers, increase blog comments, etc. I don't want to name that blogger in public, coz I know that his blog actually has lot of followers and he holds some real standing in blogging world. I am not doubting his genuineness, but don't want to mention him for his such posts. I have actually read one of his posts where he has guided how can one fake RSS subscriber count on your blog. And what you showed in your case, is exactly the same thing.

  27. Interesting and disappointing.

  28. Well done Magali

    ReplyDelete
  29. Infact if the said "Blogger" is reading this comment list, I challenge him to comeup with so many comments to his defence post...I wouldn't want to post on his blog since that would count as a hit......

    ReplyDelete
  30. damn..hell hath no fury like a woman wronged.

u just destroyed the man...some people are born original, some achieve some sort of originality and some borrow others originality...life.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well done, Magali, for exposing this chap. And for collecting evidence in the form of screenshots. You'd make a good detective : )

In my opinion it is not proper to copy an entire article or blogpost even if the real author is credited for it; what is more important is the real author's permission to do so. It is ok to quote a few lines, provided that the name of the real author is mentioned and a link to the original article is added.

And I think it's better to be an average, original writer than to be an excellent plagiarist. Write whatever you want to say in the best way you can rather than steal someone's work.

    ReplyDelete
  32. wonder why ppl go to so much trouble as to copy paste and claim its their own?wt exactly are they goin to get by that?bloggin is what u want to write.why bother when u dont hav nething better to write

  33. There should be a Paramveer Chakra (or something similar) for those who find plagiarizers!

Way to go! And while you're at it, find more :D
