Goodbye 2011 (a wrap up)

It that time of the year again. Just a little over a day before we enter the new year, so I'm doing another long, rambly wrap up post like last year.
Since I showed you the CD version of Songs from the Big Chair last year I thought I'd show the vinyl LP this year.
The stuff I will really remember about 2011? Discovering analog photography. It has made me happy, passionate & a little more artistic Going on a vacation with friends, I hadn't been on vacation with anyone but my parents before, & this was so fun. Also starting to collect cameras & vinyl records.
Tears For Fears remained my favorite band ever. I'm glad to say I have their first three albums on vinyl now, & that makes me really happy. We haven't been able to find a satisfactory turntable yet but I'm sure we will soon. Also I discovered David Bowie, I love his music!
I'm alone at home this year, so it's a lot like last year. I didn't want to vacation with my parents at the moment so I stayed home. But staying alone this year is quite different than last year, I am much more at ease, sleeping better, cooking meals & not letting the house get too messy. And I hope to do some laundry as well tomorrow. These may seem like small silly things but to me their not, I have a wonderful mom who usually does all the housework so I don't have to. But me doing all the stuff that she normally took care of, I feel very independent & grown up about it.
I am no longer talking to someone who I called my best friend last year, it feels slightly weird but I should have done it a long time ago, trust me. I found a nice new friend & we have so much fun, exploring the city, talking for hours & pushing each other's buttons (in a fun, friendly way).

Now instead of making new year's resolutions, I did something call good intentions at the start of this year. [You can find them here].
I reexamined them a little while ago & was very glad to see that I kept most of them-
good intentions for the new year 2011
1. do random good deeds.
I did this. Quite a few times. One of those is especially memorable, I will share it in a post soon.
2. don't get angry easily.
This was a tough one to follow, & there was a month or so when I was angry & upset a lot, but I got over it. This is not one of those things that I can really tick off, but I did try to stay calmer & approach things in a zen way & let things go.
3. swear less.
I don't think I did this. In fact, I don't think I really want to do it ever, I just need to have a good filter so I don't say anything offensive when elders or religious people are around.
4. read more books
I did! Maybe not as many as I would've have liked because blogging, photography etc. kept me pretty busy. I did buy many books though, some of which I haven't read yet.
5. eat more. don't skip meals even if I'm busy.
I think I did this. I'm not 100% sure but even on college days I'm often at the college canteen or Cafe Andora or Candies. I still need to eat more, though.
6. sleep earlier so i can wake up in the mornings.
Oh I didn't do this, not at all! :( I tried but I am such a night owl, I think I need to resign myself to that fact.
7. don't bunk college so much.
Eeep, no. I still bunk so much, damn these college timings.
8. listen to more music.
Oh I definitely did this, music makes me so happy. :)
9. eat more chocolates & ice cream.
Done!
10. take risks. try new things.
To me analog photography was new but oh so risky at first, especially when you are new to it, it can be challenging & sometimes frustrating. I kept to it though & now nothing gives me as much joy.
11. start volunteering somewhere again on a regular basis.
I did this as well. I had been going with my mother to a local Home for the Aged since I was 10 or 11. I helped out there in my own way when I was younger but later I stopped going that often, though I still knew most of the nuns there, I felt somewhat negative & told myself I was too busy. But in June 2011 I decided that I wanted to start again & joined a lay people's association there & I'm there an average of twice or thrice every month, I definitely feel very happy about this & will continue.
12. finish more stuff from my 20 before 20 list.
I sorta fazed out the list. I'm not sure why, it's just after a year or so you realized that you have changed & don't want the same things you once did.
13. see beauty in everything around me.
I did. Seeing beauty in everything helped my analog photography; or was it the other way? Maybe analog photography helped me see beauty. But either way I did have quite a few yuugen (幽玄) moments. Yuugen is supposed to be a Japanese word sudden moments when you have this profound, mysterious sense of the beauty of life. (I found this word via Allison's blog, thanks Allison!)
I am happy with how my good intentions list turned out, definitely make one this year as well.

Something I realized about (my) life? Good things happen, bad things happen. There are days when I'm deliriously happy & days when I feel somewhat depressed. But then at the end of the year I look back & I am filled with happiness for all the wonderful things that happened & even the people who wronged me, because they just made me a little stronger.
And I'm super lucky to have nice, understanding parents. Although I don't have too many friends, I am happy with the few that I do have & proud to call them my friends. I feel extremely blessed & lucky & fortunate, I don't think I have done anything deserving enough to have a life as nice as this & people who are there for me if I need them.
I cannot wait to see what 2012 has in store for me! And if the world has to end, I won't be so sad because I lived my life.

How did your year go, what are the things you will remember the most about 2011? I'd love it if you shared with me in the comments.

love,

PS-  I just read that BBC radio 6 is going to be playing only Vinyl on New Year's Day, I may not be in UK but this still makes me quite happy.

The 2011 Analog Photography Round Up

When I saw this wonderful post on Michelle's blog I knew I had to do it as well. It's a great way to look back at a year from a film-photography point of view.
There is a problem, though. I didn't really keep track of the number of films I used, so mine might be slightly off. But I will try to calculate roughly.

I actually started shooting analog in May this year. And it was slow at first, because I had some bad experiences with film & felt pretty limited with the two analog cameras I owned then (the Golden Half & Actionsampler).
Despite the early disappointments, I kept to it & I was soon hooked.

Total number of film used: about 25.

Cameras used-
1. LC-A - 5
2. Fisheye no.2 - 3
3. Fuji Instax Mini - 3
3. Actionsampler - 2
4. Golden Half - 2
5. Diana Mini - 2
6. LC-Wide (borrowed) - 2
7. Superheadz Wide & Slim - 1
8. Holga 120 GCFN (used at a workshop) - 1
9. LC-A+ (borrowed) - 1
10. Yashica Electro 35 (borrowed)- 1

Types of film-
1. Color Negative {Kodak 400, Lomography CN 400, Lomography CN 100} - 18
2. Redscale film {Lomography Redscale xr 50-200} - 1
3. Slide {Lomography Xpro 200, Lomography Xpro Chrome} - 2
4. Medium format 120 film {Lomography B&W 100 120} - 1
5. Fuji Instax Mini film - 3

New Cameras- {I did go a little crazy camera buying this year, but I don't regret it at all. :) }
1. Lomography ActionSampler
2. Fuji Cheki 50
3. Lomography La Sardina (I ended up switching it out for a Diana Mini)
4. Lomography Fisheye 2 (won this on a contest on Lomography India)
5. Lomo LC-A (I bought two of these)
6. Zeiss Ikon Contaflex Super B (gift from an uncle. Haven't been able to get it working but I hope I can soon)
7. Superheadz Wide & Slim
8. Fed 5B
9. Smena 8M
10. Smena Symbol
11. Yashica Electro 35
12. Canon A-1

I have a very good feeling about the Canon A-1, I haven't finished a roll yet but I will soon & I'm excited to see results from it.
So this was 2011. I'm not 100% sure if the number of films is right, it could be more (definitely not less).
I will definitely keep a proper record in 2012. And comparing years will be fun, because I am sure I will be shooting a lot more film in 2012.

Journal- Typewriter Eco-Journal by Julia Rothman

As promised last week, this is the second journal I purchased. Like the last one, this is also an eco-journal, it's printed on recycled paper with soy based inks. They're both published by the same publisher, Chronicle Books, & this one is illustrated by the Julia Rothman.
The thing that attracted me to this one? Well you must know already with the layout & all but vintage typewriters are my latest obsession, if anyone has leads on how to procure one locally please let me know!
 (images via buyolympia)

This is going to be my second journal (after I'm done with the first). I cannot wait to fill in the pages.
Some people like clean, blank pages as their journals but personally I like journals like these, every pages cheers me up & inspires me to write a little more.

I'm thankful for...

1. The fact that winters in Bombay aren't too cold. It still looks like summer during the day but you can feel winter in the air.
2. Technology, particularly gtalk, facebook, twitter & skype so I can keep in touch with my parents & not feel the 7,641 mile distance as much.
3. Friends to eat pizzas with, friends to eat gelato with, friends to chat for hours with, friends to explore Bombay with. You sure are lucky when you get that one friend who does all these things with you. :)
4. A nice roof over my head. (courtesy my parents, obviously)
5. Blogs & blogging. I'm thankful for my blog & everyone who takes the time to visit/comment; I'm also thankful for all of you amazing bloggers whom I read regularly, who never fail to inspire me with your posts & photos.
6. My cameras. I love them so much, some more than others.
7. Mailmen & courier delivery guys. Thanks, without you guys I wouldn't have been able to get awesome stuff from around the globe.
8. The few friends & family that care. This is to everyone who upon hearing I would be staying alone, offered to help, offered their homes & the few who keep calling to know I'm safe. Thanks so much. ♡
9. My iPhone. To me it is officially the most awesome device in the world. It multitasks so well. Day planner? iPhone. Kitchen timer? iPhone. Music? iPhone. Bored? Games on the iPhone. Light meter? iPhone. GPS? iPhone. Check/write email? iPhone. Take awesome photos? iPhone. To me there is nothing this nifty little gadget cannot do, it is by far the best phone I've ever had, my next phone too is definitely gonna be a newer iPhone. Again, thank you to my parents.

~ Cold Water Locket ~

Last night I was sitting here thinking about how I should buy myself something for Christmas, something that isn't camera or photography themed/related (don't get me wrong, I love those things, it's just that I wanted something slightly different now).
So I decided on something sea themed. Perhaps I have been browsing sealust too often recently?
I finally settled on the Cold Water Locket from the Blue Balloon Shop (on etsy).
Marie is the talented lady behind the shop, other than create these lovely pieces of jewellery she also does amazing photography & is a violinist as well. Oh & she has the cutest little boy in the entire world, I thought that deserved a mention.
I'm lucky to own another one of Marie's amazing pieces. I haven't worn it as much as I'd like to but I look at it often.
Here is the locket I purchased (all photos are Marie's)
I love everything about it- the fact that it's brass & the wonderful picture of Lake Minesotta (clicked by Marie). The etchings on the outside of this locket remind me of a vintage compass, I cannot wait to get this lovely necklace & put photos of loved ones in it. ♡
{Definitely gonna show this to you when it arrives!}
Cannot believe Christmas is over! I spent a quiet one at home this year, it wasn't much different than any other day for me. What about you?

lots of love,

✩ Merry Christmas! ✩

Just a quick little post to wish your loved ones & you a Merry Christmas from my parents & me. You don't have to be a religious person to enjoy the day!

I hope you have an amazing time & spend it with the ones who truly matter in your lives. I hope that you had lots of cake & eggnog.
I think it would be truly amazing if you could brighten someone else's Christmas in some way, however small (maybe give them a small gift, or just a hug & a wish).

And now, following tradition on this blog I will share a Christmas song with you. This was recorded as a TV special for Christmas '82 :

lots of love & best wishes,

The Canon A-1

Let me introduce you guys to my newest camera- The wonderful Canon A-1.
I ordered it some time ago off ebay, & it finally arrived a few days ago. It didn't come cheap but the kit seems wonderful! It is came with it's original box, & two FD lenses (the 50mm f1.8 & 28mm f2.8) & the original strap, (that was never used!)
Cosmetically it is in almost mint condition. The seller was kind enough to put in a new battery so I could start playing with it right away.
I have always wanted a film SLR. I tried to use my Dad's Olympus OM10, but even after a trip to the repair shop the mirror keeps getting stuck.
When I read up on this amazing camera I knew I wanted it. It has all the features one could want in a classic SLR. OK, maybe I should stop gushing so much, seeing as how I haven't even tested it with film yet (first roll in progress), but I have a good feeling about this. The camera is completely manual focus, that might hinder my speed a little, but it does have a split image rangefinder focussing aid, for precise focussing (no zone focussing guesswork like the LC-A!)
Cannot wait to try B&W and higher ASA films with this baby.
On the personal front, my parents left on a little vacation a few days ago, & I have been enjoying myself doing absolutely nothing. I gave (& by that I mean forced them) to take two cameras, the Canon Rebel xs & Fuji Instax mini. They are not so much for constantly clicking photos like I am, but I do hope they bring back some awesome photos which I will definitely share here.
I have just rediscovered how much of a homebody I really am, they've been gone four days & I haven't even stepped out of the home once. Yes. The closest I've gone to the main door is to pick up the newspaper every morning, & accept the occasional courier / fedex parcel (my awesome hunter wellies arrived, yay!)
Never having to get out of your pyjamas is am amazing thing. But I am going to go out one of these days, I don't want to forget what direct sunlight feels like.
I will keep you guys posted.

love,

Journal- Evolve Eco-Journal by Nikki McClure

Do you guys remembered the Q&A a day journal that I featured here last month & ordered as well?
After a lot of waiting flipkart contacted me & told me they weren't able to get it for me & that it was out of stock. I was heartbroken. But I'm not angry/upset with flipkart, their customer service is still Ace. :)
So I sought out to buy a couple of journals for myself for the new year. I have decided to start journalling actively again (more on that at the end of this month) & figured I needed some pretty ones to boost my creativity & keep morale high.
So after much deliberation I settled on a couple of awesome eco journals. Not only are they amazingly pretty, they are made of 100% recycled paper & soy-based inks. Yeah.
The journal contains the art of Nikki Mcclure, a self-taught artist known for her intricate & beautiful papercuts. Check it out (all images via buyolympia):

When I finally got a hold of it I was so glad I picked this journal. Everything about it is amazing, the colors & art are just lovely & I know I will enjoy filling it up!
I've had it a couple of days now & I've written in it every day. I am happy! I did purchase another journal for when this is filled up & I will show it to you next week.

Timeswimmers

Chun Yi crossing Venus ocean.
Today I'm doing a sponsor spotlight post. Say hello to Life etc.'s newest sponsor, Timeswimmers an online graphic novel that has caught my attention because of the themes. Read on to hear more about it from it's creator, Stanley.

What a world we have! We are told “there is no such thing as people living on other planets” But if we turn to our history (particularly in India) we find plenty of proof that we have had space travel in the past. The ship were called “Vimanas”. Here is a description. "The texts on Vimanas are numerous, and highly detailed. They describe entire flight manuals on the control of the various types of Vimanas. Some were saucer shaped, others cigar shaped. The Vimanas appeared to be powered by some sort of anti-gravity device. (Source)
Timeswimmers: The Story of “A” and Timeswimmers:
Chun Yi are two new graphic novels that focus on this part of the human history, reality and possibility.
Only it does in in the context of Time and Space Travel as a normal part of the daily lives of someone somewhere. “The mind is a fertile place.
Chun Yi enters spaceship.
I love to let mine run wild and write down what it comes up with, then convert that to story lines and graphic, which become the final product.”

“I believe that women, in the past and in the future, have and will play major roles in bringing our societies to higher levels, just because of the love that is gendered between mother and child. Most of us had a mother, and most of us appreciate how intelligent and dedicated women are to their children. Most of us appreciate our mothers, so it should be easy to imagine woman in roles as adventurers and leaders. I’m just painting those pictures to help make it easier for others to imagine, which is how we get our future world, by what we imagine today.”
Close up of "A"
Timeswimmers was created and is being created because WE are about to enter an era when all the lies and cover ups about beings from other planets and dimensions and the part they have played, do and will play in our lives have come to and end We will begin to live in a reality that includes the fact that they are our ancestors and we are their great grandchildren many times removed.

Timeswimmers is the unfoldment of that story shared from the perspective of what that might be like or is, for some of us who have made and continue contact with those who are bringing these truths to light.
And because that reality includes a balance between women AND men experiencing and playing out roles of importance and of mutual impact, Timeswimmers stories includes both, with an emphasis on the women right now because to bring about balance, we have to accentuate what has been missing.

Graphic novel, feminism, fantasy & of course the extra terrestrial- This combines so much of what I love! :)
Do check out the comic & let me know your feedback. If you wish to sponsor this blog just go here.

Rainy Bombay

A few photos from many months ago (11th June 2011) all taken with the Lomo LC-Wide at the Lomography Monsoon lomowalk (the first one I ever went for, yay!)

Prashin & me.
Deepa with a Sprocket Rocket.
I know you probably can't tell very well but that's Kunal about to take a photo of a cabbie with the Diana Mini, you can see it here.
LC-Wide x Kodak 400
All these photos were taken in town (Fort, around Churchgate etc.)
Not a big fan of how these look. I really dislike the rain & fact that the meter of this camera was slightly off (it overexposed). The sky looks white! (I really like blue skies). But that was still a fun day. My first lomowalk, I met some awesome people & the journey back was so much fun! (I don't realize how much fun it is to terrorize people!)
Still posting photos I took months ago. Hopefully I will catch up soon so I can post only new stuff then. These are the last of the LC-Wide photos.
Bye for now!

Chivas Studio 2011

Chivas Studio 2011 was in Bombay on the 10th & 11th December at Mehboob Studios, Bandra.
I couldn't make it for Day 1 (missed the musical!) but I went for day 2.
Art Foyer featuring photography by Jatin Kampani & art by Paresh Maity:

This beautiful art installation (oil on fibreglass) by Paresh meant to show the relationship between men & women.

A huge painting by Paresh titled God's Own Country.

This adorable cat roamed around the venue & charmed the guests!
Art jam (Brian Olsen & Mrigya & Angela Johnson as the muse):

Overall it was an amazing evening (partially because I had great company). It was filled with so many things I love like amazing music, art & photography. There were a lot of celebs (I don't really care for them, but it's fun to see the photographers scurry as they arrive). I did however get a little excited to see Dalip Tahil again (last saw him in The Sound of Music), that man is so talented & I was definitely a little starstruck.
