Some photos from my ancestral (maternal grandfather's) home in Vanxem, Goa. That clay rooster was used to store drinking water. The concrete seat in the second photo is called sopo & two of those were always built in old Goan homes (one on each side), just outside the main door.

Is there a symbolism to the two concrete seats? I really love the first two photos.
ReplyDeleteHi Magali ... lovely pics. esp the concrete seat "sopo" .... but why only 4 - why not more ? when i saw the first photo - i was excited to see more interesting photo - the secong one built more excitment and then crashed and after 2 more it finished ..... sad !!
ReplyDeleteSo post more pics. :)
Thank You Melly. I don't think there's any specific symbolism... It was just a done thing then. Those days Goans were very deprived of any forms of entertainment, I've heard stories of my great grandma walking for miles just to see a parade on a feast day. So when the ladies were done with their work, they would just sit at this seat, watching people pass by (one every five minutes if they're lucky) & wave & make small talk. They still do it. Also if a neighbor came by for a quick chat, it was a good place to sit (good vantage point!).
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment Sharmila Ray ! These were actually the only pictures I took there. I feel quite bad about it in hindsight. :(
ReplyDeleteThere's always next time thought. :)
