What To Do When Travelling in Essex

Essex is a great little county that is located just North-East of Greater London. If you're travelling to London you definitely shouldn't miss a trip to Essex, there are so many things to see & do there. If the extreme hustle & bustle of the big city is not your idea of a vacation, you'll love Essex as it's so much more relaxed. In this post I'm going to try to summarize the best things to do when you're there.

The Essex sky & seaside.

1. Go to a Health Spa
Going to a spa is definitely one of my favorite treats, so what better place is there to have a health spa break? Spa days in Essex, with it's beautiful landscapes & slower pace of life will help you truly relax & take things slower.

2. Go to a Family Amusement Park
Essex is quite a family friendly destination. If you're travelling with kids, they'll love to spend a day at Old Macdonalds farm, Marsh Farm or Barleyland, all places that cater to visitors young & old, have petting & other hands-on sections with farm animals (your kids can even milk a cow at Barleyland!), gentle rides & shows that not only entertain but educate as well.

3. Visit the Landmarks
In Essex, over 14,000 buildings have listed status in the county, and around 1000 of those are recognised as of Grade I or II importance. The buildings range from the 7th century Saxon church of St Peter-on-the-Wall, to the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club. I love getting photos of heritage buildings, wherever in the world I am... they just don't make them like they used to anymore!

4. Walk / Cycle through the Countryside
Forget traffic & noise. Essex is known for it's gentle countryside & you can experience that by taking a walk or cycling through. The constantly changing East Anglican skies, miles of country lanes, hidden byways etc are much better explored by walking or cycling than in any motorized vehicle!

5. Go to a Museum
Whether your interest is archaeology, natural history, local history, military or railway, you will find a museum that houses something of interest to you. Essex is also home to the National Jazz Archive, UK's premier research & info center for anything jazz, blues & related music.

6. Shopping!
Of course shopping is a must do no matter where you're travelling, & Essex is famed for having independent retailers, lots of different handicrafts / handmade goods, antique shop & regular farmers markets.

I had a lot of fun putting this list together, & I hope you find it useful.

Love,

  3. I did see some adventure & water sports during my online research but didn't pursue it because it's not my thing. I should have included it though.
