Golden Half - Bandra & beyond

Superheadz Golden Half x Lomography CN400

All of these are a few months old! First three were all taken in Bandra. Akshay being a creeper (Goa). Mom & me, hat parade event at the local Old Folks home.

Last night for spent in front of the TV with mom, sipping on homemade mojitos & watching Labyrinth. Yes! Mom finally saw it & she said she liked it too.
This afternoon I got the diagnosis on my MacBook Pro- the battery is busted, everything else is fine. Then I got to know how much the replacement battery would cost... whoa whoa & WHOA. I was a bit down for a while, but then I figured that these things happen once in a while, no biggie. I'll just get the replacement battery & get on with life, y'know? My mac is still one of my favorite things ever. My source of income & entertainment. I love you  MacBook Pro (I should name it already, right?) Anyway I should get it back in three working days, which by the service center's silly calendar probably means Wednesday or Thursday. Still praying that all of my stuff (photos & all!) are safe. Also the verdict is in, I'm an internet addict. The first few days without my mac were spent browsing on the iPad till the battery died, & being very restless (in endless loop). I'm feeling a bit calmer now, hope to get some reading done, especially this David Bowie biography.
I was only able to share these photo because these were uploaded here (& forgotten) before my mac started giving me trouble. Sometimes going through your drafts can be a good thing.
This month has been a lot of expenditure for me (I will show you the amazing things I bought next week, I haven't even seen it myself). But I also start a cool new social media related job from July, so yay! I've been aching to buy this new toy camera for a while, but I promised my mother I was done, she will kill me if I even bring it up. I have had amazing mail days...I'm expecting some more stuff too & I will have a mega amazing day when dad gets home soon. I will not lie, after a little bit of the blues these past couple of months I love where I am in my life right now! *knocks on wood*
I think I'm slowly getting better with the whole dealing with life thing, you know? The secret to eternal happiness is mine. It's not bad things don't happen but there's no use moping too much. I can be sad for a bit but then I just put on my big girl panties & deal with it. There's so much to be happy & thankful for at any given time, there's no use focussing on negative stuff. Oh & eat lots of chocolate. Though you never need a reason / excuse to eat chocolate. Especially when it's filled with liqueur. ;)

Lots of Love,

On Borrowing & Lending

As you may know, my beloved MacBook Pro started malfunctioning a while ago & now has sort of died on me. It's at the service center for (very very overpriced) repairs. Since I don't have access to any of my photos in the meantime, I'm going to be focussing on 'written' posts for a bit.

My mom raised me to be a very self sufficient person. We don't borrow stuff from anyone. She taught me that if you don't have something, you should make do without it. And if you really need it, then buy it. The furthest extent she will go with borrowing is to borrow a pen from someone when she needs to fill a form somewhere & hasn't carried one.

I have always adhered by that principle. I respect it. If you break something of yours, you are the only one to blame. In eight grade, I only lent a precious vintage horror novel to a friend (it was The Amityville Horror, if you must know). When she finally returned it, the plastic cover of the book was completely ripped on one side. I brought it up, & she told me that is was already done when I lent it to her. Now I may not be the most careful with my stuff, but I am extremely meticulous. I knew she was lying right away, but I dropped it. Besides, the book didn't mean that much to me.

When I was in eleventh grade, I made friends with a budding photographer on twitter. We met a couple of times, & chatted about photography over coffee. He told me that though he photographs a lot of gigs, he doesn't have a camera of his own yet, & depends on the generosity of friends. One night he tweeted me, asking if he could borrow my dslr for a rock concert he was attending. He would pick it up from my house & bring it right back the next morning, he promised.I admit that I considered it for a little while, before asking my mother (she bought it for me!) She flatly refused... & I'm glad. Later that night I saw his tweets about how rough the mosh pit was, & how he was black & blue from all that madness. What could have happened to my beloved camera if I had lent it to him that night? I shudder at the thought. Could I have counted on him to take care of it like it were his own? I seriously doubt that. Though I didn't say anything to him about it, we didn't really tweet each other after that- I guess he realized I wouldn't be of much use to him? He's no longer a budding photographer, he's even a bit of a twitter celebrity today, & I'm glad to say we're no longer in touch.

Most recently, I dressed up for a blogger's luncheon. The highlight of that outfit was my a beautiful new vintagey forever new bag, a gift from my mom when she was on vacation (she always think of me, how lucky am I?!) & a silk floral blazer that I fell in love with in the zara store, & spent ten minutes to my mom trying to justify buying it (she caved of course! She can't resist my puppy dog eyes She can't stand to see me grovel for long, I guess). I loved how the outfit turned out so I posted it on my style blog, & facebook too. I got a lot of positive feedback, (especially on facebook) which quite made me feel elated, quite frankly (I have good choice! I was not the only one who fell hopelessly in love with that gorgeous floral blazer. haha). Then when I was on facebook, I saw a message pop up... it was this girl, asking to borrow my blazer & bag for a portfolio shoot. I fumed a little. I didn't know this girl too well & didn't even like her (with good reason). Despite her being on my facebook list, we were far from friends (that is why I need to prune it more regularly)... & here she was, just asking me for my precious stuff. I took the less awkward way out of that & blamed my mom. She bought that stuff for me, she wouldn't be ok with it. And as I always do when I'm angry, I tried to calm down with a little bit of quick introspection, trying to find the real reasons. What if she damaged my blazer? Would she buy me a new one? (They aren't cheap). And if she damaged the bag, would she fly to New Zealand & get me another one? (It's already changed season, they wouldn't even have it available!) But that's not the only reason I was angry- there was principle involved.

It's not like I'm completely averse to borrowing/lending, you know? As precious as my analog cameras are to me, I've lent them out to friends. I have a photographer friend who has lent me his cameras too. I think it's ok if you feel like you know the person, you know that they will respect your possessions & lend you stuff if you needed/wanted it too (give & take is very important in any kind of relationship, right?) But call me bitchy, I will not give my things to just anyone because they're forward enough to ask.

So what are your thoughts on the matter? Would you or wouldn't you? Do you have a story to share about when you did?

Love,

What To Do When Travelling in Essex

Essex is a great little county that is located just North-East of Greater London. If you're travelling to London you definitely shouldn't miss a trip to Essex, there are so many things to see & do there. If the extreme hustle & bustle of the big city is not your idea of a vacation, you'll love Essex as it's so much more relaxed. In this post I'm going to try to summarize the best things to do when you're there.

The Essex sky & seaside.
Image: @spacebee on instagram
1. Go to a Health Spa
Going to a spa is definitely one of my favorite treats, so what better place is there to have a health spa break? Spa days in Essex, with it's beautiful landscapes & slower pace of life will help you truly relax & take things slower.

2. Go to a Family Amusement Park
Essex is quite a family friendly destination. If you're travelling with kids, they'll love to spend a day at Old Macdonalds farm, Marsh Farm or Barleyland, all places that cater to visitors young & old, have petting & other hands-on sections with farm animals (your kids can even milk a cow at Barleyland!), gentle rides & shows that not only entertain but educate as well.

3. Visit the Landmarks
In Essex, over 14,000 buildings have listed status in the county, and around 1000 of those are recognised as of Grade I or II importance. The buildings range from the 7th century Saxon church of St Peter-on-the-Wall, to the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club. I love getting photos of heritage buildings, wherever in the world I am... they just don't make them like they used to anymore!

4. Walk / Cycle through the Countryside
Forget traffic & noise. Essex is known for it's gentle countryside & you can experience that by taking a walk or cycling through. The constantly changing East Anglican skies, miles of country lanes, hidden byways etc are much better explored by walking or cycling than in any motorized vehicle!

5. Go to a Museum
Whether your interest is archaeology, natural history, local history, military or railway, you will find a museum that houses something of interest to you. Essex is also home to the National Jazz Archive, UK's premier research & info center for anything jazz, blues & related music.

6. Shopping!
Of course shopping is a must do no matter where you're travelling, & Essex is famed for having independent retailers, lots of different handicrafts / handmade goods, antique shop & regular farmers markets.

I had a lot of fun putting this list together, & I hope you find it useful.

Travelling with technology

Travelling today nearly always includes lugging along a range of technological devices. Laptops, iPads, iPhones, Blackberries, digital camera, portable speakers… You name it, someone has taken it with them. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, after all, if it is a work trip we need to stay in touch with the office. Or if you are writing a travel blog, you need to have a computer to write it on. There are smart ways of travelling with technology that you can do to minimise heavy luggage, huge bills and dead batteries.

1. Invest in a proper bag
If you are planning on lugging a laptop around the airport (or airports), it is worthwhile investing in a reasonably comfortable bag. Carrying a heavy bag then sitting in a tiny plane seat for 12 hours can really mess with your neck and back, which can be a real drag when you get to your destination. Backpacks and laptop bags are no longer restricted to the realm of geekdom, you can now get super suave ones just by browsing online. If you don't want to take your laptop but want a computer when you get there, see if there are any companies which will lend you one on an operating lease, like Flexi Commercial does in Australia.

2. Don't double up
As convenient as they are, you probably don't need to take a tablet computer and a laptop. Think about what you will be doing most and then take the one that will be easier to use. If you are strictly a web browser, stick to the tablet. If you are going to be writing, editing or working then a laptop would probably be the way to go. The same goes with cameras – if you are a serious photographer then by all means, take your DSLR, lenses and whatever else you need. But if you are just happy snapping, why not just take your iPhone? The camera quality is high, it is one less thing to lose and you won't need that extra charger.

3. Go to cafes
A huge amount of cafes throughout America and Europe offer free wi-fi to customers. Ordering a coffee or some lunch can get you a solid web session and you get to eat as well! Places like Starbucks and McDonalds often have particular systems set up so make sure you ask about them when ordering. Be careful not to overstay your welcome though, some waitresses don't appreciate you lurking
for hours with just one cup of coffee.

GoodHomes Magazine Blogger Bonding at Botticino, Trident Hotel BKC

A couple of weeks ago, when I saw the invite to a Blogger Bonding session with Ronita Italia Dhanu, editor of GoodHomes India magazine, I definitely squealed for a bit before hurriedly typing out my reply- "I would love to be there!" I had met some of the team members at the GoodHomes Loves event & hence knew that not only are they awesome people, they were going to organize one heck of an event.
The lunch took place last Monday at Botticino, the Italian restaurant at Trident, Bandra Kurla (you may seen this instagram photo of my place card in a pear!) (Also, I did an outfit post with what I wore that day on my style blog). It was such a great day- red wine, an absolutely delicious three course Italian lunch & most importantly awesome company. We chatted about our blogs, lives, eco friendly décor & a whole lot more. Why, the memories of that day make me all warm & happy inside.
Sadly I cannot link to the bloggers, I remember faces & stories but I'm not the best with names. I just got the photos from that day in my inbox, I thought I'd share them here.

The table & the awesome goody bags we all got.

(left) Editor, Ronita Italia Dhanu
Not only is Ronita Italia Dhanu smart, she's one of the sweetest, most amiable people ever. Always making everyone feel at ease.

I wasn't having the best hair day, & candid photography means I got caught with a repertoire of funny expressions- Do I look goofy or do I look goofy? I'm sharing these for laughs. =)

The toast!

Conversation happening.

Kainaz from Trident & Ronita.

(left) Pear & Pecorino salad

Notice how three of us have our arms in the air in the last three photos? Yes, I can be arbitrary sometimes.
The dessert- Sorbet & Tiramisu. The Tiramisu was SO GOOD but I couldn't enjoy it properly cause I was so full by then.

All of us.

At the end we were all supposed to get a hotel tour but we skipped it because we were having trouble walking too much with out full bellies & all. I'd love to go back sometime & get that tour.
Thank you to everyone who organized this amazing lunch- Ronita, Seema & Avril from GoodHomes, Rajavi from Foxymoron, & as I'm typing this I'm sure I've missed out a few (sorry about that!)
This was undoubtedly the best blogger event I have ever been to. Warm, intimate & overall perfect.

David Bowie - Life on Mars?

I am David Bowie fangirl, but if I had to pick just one of his songs, this would be it.
BBC radio 2 described this song as having one of the strangest lyrics ever, a cross between a Broadway musical and a Salvador Dalí painting. Neil McCormick of The Daily Telegraph ranked it as #1 in his 100 Greatest Songs of All Time list & said of it "A quite gloriously strange anthem, where the combination of stirring, yearning melody and vivid, poetic imagery manage a trick very particular to the art of the song: to be at once completely impenetrable and yet resonant with personal meaning. You want to raise your voice and sing along, yet Bowie’s abstract cut-up lyrics force you to invest the song with something of yourself just to make sense of the experience. And, like all great songs, it's got a lovely tune." And I'm only telling you all that because if you asked me to write something about the song, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to do so (besides, they say it so much better!)
There was a BBC television drama Life on Mars named after this song, & that show even had a spin off called Ashes to Ashes after another amazing & surreal David Bowie song.
If you're new to Bowie, you might find his look a tad shocking, & I think that was the point. (sort of the whole thing Lady GaGa is trying to emulate now). If you're curious about his very different eyes, (as is everyone who's ever seen this video), they're the result of one of his pupils being permanently dilated from a childhood accident. I also really love his keen sartorial sense, just look at that beautiful turquoise suit.
If you're not into David's look in this video from 1973 & can't get past it, you can watch this minimal live performance from 1999.
Many comments on the video claim that this is better than the original. I don't know about that, but it made me quite emotional with how beautiful it is.

Love,

PS- I was one of the happiest people ever when Youtube started to get stricter with artist attribution & musicians started to have official channels to put their videos. But VEVO? I really really hate VEVO. It sponsors most big musician's Youtube channels. I originally wanted to share a different video today, by one of my favorite bands Tears for Fears, but their official (VEVO) channel makes sure their music videos aren't available in India. Why? What are they losing if I watch & share an amazing music video? I know it's not that simple, but it should be. Sometimes laws & privacy policies & all that are inherently stupid.

Giveaway | Win a Retro mini eco-journal set {closed}

A little while ago it dawned on me that I, in over three years, I've never had a giveaway on this blog! Sure, there were a few sponsored ones but nothing personal.
I just recently noticed that this blog crossed 200 members via google friend connect! What's better time to hold it than now?! So this is just a thank you giveaway. I LOVE this ride that is blogging, & thank you for engaging with me by visiting/commenting/tweeting/everything else & just making it more awesome.
I kept wracking my brains about what to give away. I wanted something that somehow related to the topics I cover on this blog, gender neutral (so anyone can enter!) & easy to ship world wide.
Finally I found something that I think is perfect- I bought myself this super cute Retro mini eco-journal set, illustrated by the very talented Julia Rothman (You can buy it here- USA India) earlier this year & since I loved it I just ordered another for this giveaway.
It's eco-friendly & completely adorable. There are four eco journals in the set- the first one is especially special, to me. It has old Kodak brownies, Polaroid land cameras, Polaroid 1000s, rangefinders, film canisters & film strips. I'm using mine to note down details of films I use. The other three have old rotary phones ☏, gaming consoles / controllers & boomboxes! (I've photographed my set, so the winner will get a brand new, unopened set!)

Update: I am so thrilled to see all these entries! In final drawing, if there are more than 180 entries, I will order another set & pick a second winner!

Now let's get down to business!

Good Old Fashioned Pancakes from Scratch {Recipe}

Pancakes are such an integral part of American breakfasts. But I had never even tasted them till about a year ago. In Goa & Mumbai, the Catholics make pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, but those are British style pancakes- you know thin pancakes, served as a roll with sweet fillings like jaggery.
The first time I tried American style was at McDonalds breakfast, over a year ago (they are served as hot cakes there). They are served simply, hot off the griddle with some maple syrup mixture & butter. It may not have been a foodgasmic moment for me, but I kept going back for the pancakes & really grew to like them.
So a couple of months ago I decided to try making pancakes from scratch. Very few ingredients are needed, if you bake at home you will probably have all of them, at least I did. I sent my mom out to get maple syrup & she came back with that, plus Betty Crocker pancake mix (looks like she didn't have faith in my cooking ability, I showed her!) I found the mix very annoying to work with, & didn't enjoy the resultant pancakes at all.
So after I was done with that horrible mixture, I made some of my own! One word? Delicious. Second word? EASY!
Yes. My mom loves them. Yet to try them with dad but I'm pretty sure he'll love them too! (Or I'll kill him! Just kidding. No, I'm not.)
I realize that many of you may have already tried this. But as I said, this is so awesome & easy that if even one of you feels inspired to try this (& does so!) after reading my blog, then my job here is done.
Good Old Fashioned Pancakes (adapted from here).

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (maida)
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon white sugar
1 1/4 cups milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 egg
3 tablespoons butter, melted

Directions:
1. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Make a well in the center and pour in the milk, egg, vanilla extract and melted butter; mix until smooth.
2. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and serve hot.

Notes:
1. The original recipe called for a whole teaspoon of salt. I found it too salty for my taste.
2. The vanilla extract is my addition. It's optional, but it really kicks things up a notch.
3. You know something I love about this recipe? The whole 'make a well' in the dry part of the mix actually minimizes a step (you don't have to mix dry & wet ingredients separately!) One less bowl to wash is always a plus point in my book.
4. Don't worry too much about melting the butter. If it's hot where you live (like India is right now!) just keep the butter out of the fridge for 5 minutes & it will be soft enough to mix easily.
5. I don't bother with measuring the amount of batter, I just pour. That results in unevenly sized ones but they're just as tasty. If you want them slightly thinner you can try spreading the batter delicately just after you pour it.

Here's a close up photo. There's maple syrup & butter on the pancakes. I called these 'surprise pancakes'. Why? Because I coated the under side of the top pancake with nutella! Butter & maple syrup is the traditional way to go but there are so many other ways to serve it- nutella, compote, jam, preserve etc. It's tastes great with some sliced fruits too like banana / apples. The possibilities are endless, just open up your fridge / pantry & experiment.

My Grandfather's House

Some photos from my ancestral (maternal grandfather's) home in Vanxem, Goa. That clay rooster was used to store drinking water. The concrete seat in the second photo is called sopo & two of those were always built in old Goan homes (one on each side), just outside the main door.

Pre Birthday Meal, Goa

Here are some photos from early April... for some reason or the other people in my family make plans but never go out to dinner on birthdays, because we get caught up with phone calls, surprise visits & all that.
So this was what my mom & me called a pre-birthday meal. It was a week before my actual birthday, I'm glad we did it because yet again, we didn't manage to have dinner out on my birthday. It was at a simple restaurant called Shelley's just outside our resort. The exterior was designed to look like a typical Goan beach shack, but inside it was decently fancy with airconditioners, a large LCD tv & fancy bar.

We're both small eaters, & since there were only two of us we just ordered drinks (lemon soda, my favorite!) & main course- beef chilly fry, vegetable raitha & rechado (a typical Goan masala) squids. I really wanted Pork Sorpotel but they didn't have it on the menu. The food all had finely chopped chillies in it (I guess we forgot to tell them to go easy on the spice) & so mom hardly ate any (she has a mental block towards chillies! Haha)
The food was quite delicious, at the end I was so full I didn't have any place for dessert. Scratch that, I don't even think I could walk without discomfort.

OLX TV campaign

This is a sponsored post, all opinions are my own.

Everyone in India with a cable connection (or a dish, whatever) probably knows about OLX, regardless of whether they use the internet or not. That's because of their ongoing TV campaign, with quite a few short but funny ads. (I'll talk more about that soon!)
Created in Argentina in 2006, OLX is the largest place for free online classified ads in India and worldwide. Its aim is to provide a simple, fast, effective and safe solution to the buying and selling of goods and services, regardless of the user's location. OLX is available in more than 96 countries and in 40 different languages.
There are quite a few advantages of OLX, here are some of them:
-You can easily design rich colorful ads with pictures and videos.
-Control your selling, buying, and community activity in My OLX.
-Display your ads on your social networking profile (Facebook, Twitter, ...)
-Access the site from your mobile phone.
-View OLX in your local language.
Currently, OLX deals with more than 96 countries from its multiple offices located in Sao Paolo, New York, Buenos Aires, Beijing, Mumbai and Moscow.

Back to the aforementioned television campaign, OLX has had television commercials on air in India since 2011. The campaign is called "Where Buyers Meet Sellers" & they are funny ads that show day-to-day activities which highlight the advantages and simplicity of advertising oneself in the largest free classified ads place worldwide. Their tagline is Sak Kuch Bikta Hai which translates into Everything Sells. Not only is it free to sell your stuff on OLX, the whole process is quick & easy.

Of all the ads they have, the bike one is my favorite! :D
Who doesn't want good prices for their old stuff so they can upgrade & get awesome new stuff, right? For an ad to work for me, it doesn't have to have celebrities, or even a catchy jingle. I just need it to be funny! If it makes me laugh, I notice. What about you?

Kikuyu - Summer Helicopter

I'm always on the lookout for interesting songs with fun videos to feature as music video of the week. I was so excited when I came across this video by Kikuyu.

Kikuyu is a micropop project by Melbourne artist Sez Wilks. Building on five years as a vocalist and synth player for The Surly Mermaids, Kikuyu sees Sez establish her own small-scale lo-fi style. As Kikuyu, Sez loops warm vocals and wartime diva harmonies with the fuzzy in-built beats and bright tones of an Italian combo organ. The result is a melodic game-style soundtrack for life’s everyday moments.

The video is amazing on so many levels- first of all it's analog, shot on 16mm film. It's all candy colored (mostly purple/pink with pops of other colors too) & with other lovely like a turntable with a cute purple vinyl single/EP, also she makes some seriously pretty pancakes which is becoming a favorite activity of mine.

Mimosa Pudica

The mimosa pudica plant grows wild all over Goa. It's also known as touch me not & it's konkani name literally translates to 'shy bride'. Why, you ask?
Here are two pictures I took of the same mimosa plant a couple of months ago in Goa, just seconds apart!mimosa pudica plant, touch me not
The mimosa plant has a curious defense mechanism- a strong gust of wind or a light touch causes the leaves to rapidly shut. (In this case, I jostled them as I wanted them all shut). This is presumably so that they appear dead when grazing cows/goats try to eat them. They open on their own, five minutes later.
We learnt about this plant is sixth or seventh grade science, I was so smug as I knew all about them due to frequent Goa trips since I was a kid. I still 'play' with them wherever I find them.

A train ride in Mumbai

Mumbai locals trains are part of daily commuting ritual for thousands.
For me, school was walking distance but I had to take a train for four years to college.

These were from the first roll in the wide lens camera late last year. #4 of the Golden Rules of Lomography states 'Try the shot from the hip' which basically states that you should try holding your camera at different angles, & not look through the viewfinder. I put that into practice for all of these (also the first two were shot from moving trains). You may not like every photo you get with this method (for example some of mine are blurred because I wasn't supporting the camera) but it's still oddly liberating. I wouldn't have got the last photo if I hadn't stuck my hand as high as I could.
